McDowell Access to Care and Health
Connecting uninsured community members to wrap-around health care services and community supports to comprehensively address social determinants of health.
The McDowell County Health Coalition connects, convenes, collaborates, and creates opportunities for whole-person health in the McDowell community.
A healthy McDowell community where people have the opportunity to thrive.
1. Collaboration.
We engage people across boundaries to develop long-lasting solutions.
2. Equity.
We recognize both the diversity of the people in the McDowell community, as well as the diversity of their needs. We want to reduce differences in access to services and outcomes based on demographics, geography, and socio-economic status. We strive to meet people where they are and make everyone feel included authentically and consistently. If we do not have representation in the room, then we do not have the assets we need to use an equity lens.
3. The power of communities and growing leaders.
Community members have their own power, and we support them in exercising it. We listen, learn, and seek to understand the needs of all communities within McDowell County. We support leaders in creating innovative solutions that are sustainable and based on insights gained from their experiences, knowledge, and data.
4. Whole-person health.
We seek to improve both physical and behavioral health. We recognize that health outcomes are determined by social factors, including access to care, housing, interpersonal violence, education, and transportation.
The board of directors guides the Coalition and volunteers their time, treasure, and talent to implement its mission. Active members represent county government, local community forums, healthcare providers, civic organizations, educational institutions, and the faith and business communities.
